I have played them...and also own now a lower level Alvarez (not a Yairi)...I have been impressed by both the top end products and the low end ...Alvarez guitars....all models...do not get enough credit imho.

Fret Shack!!! Brief hijack OP. Mexican Stratocasters. Are there any years/periods to avoid? Or are they all the same? Just find one that feels right in the hand and pay a guy like you to change out crap hardware?
My observation on MIM Fender is that they keep getting better and better with each passing year, quite honestly. I wouldn't particularly avoid any year/production windows. Do exactly as you say - find one that works for you and then tweak to its needs/your needs.
