I'm actually impressed with Mascherano's passing for Barca. But I think Barca have had a coherence in positioning that national teams rarely can achieve. Mascherano isn't nearly as bad at passing as he was at Liverpool.
You could argue that the Messi-led Argentina succeeded despite massive mismanagement from the AFA.

I also though Banega was going to be that guy for Argentina... but injuries, off the field weirdness.. it never worked out for him... and he started playing more and more advanced...
