While this absolutely applies to 1-3, which I hated, I don't think you can really say that for 4. Plenty of wide open areas for plenty of different encounter possibilities

I know four improved upon it, but to advance the story in any way in Uncharted, which lacked any kind of sidequesting, you had to move forward in the right direction.
I'd personally rather do random crap like return a frying pan to an old lady in the Witcher, which is one of my favorite sidquests of all time, than have nothing to do but the main story in a game.
