Because of salary cap rules. If we gave him an extension it'd be based off his current contract which was made under the old cap. So he could choose to sign an extension now that would start at $21.5 million, or he could wait a year and sign a new contract that starts at a little over $30 million. He's going to wait.

One potential curve ball is you could get him an extension starting at the $30 million this next year, BUT you have to do it with cap space which pretty much means you'd have no money to sign anyone else. So the cost of locking down Cousins long term this summer means the team we ended the season with is the team we start next season with.
