Doctors very often are completely off base with their recommendations because they simply go by what the standard guidelines tell them. Usually guidelines are well supported but many times we discover that they were based on shitty science. If a doctor is not current on literature that directly relates to my particular condition they should not be considered world class. Blind trust in your physician is a quick way to become another data point in the mortality tables.
