My nephew has only ever played rec league ball and made his HS team as a 9th grader. Meanwhile some of his peers who played travel ball are burnt out and didnt even try out.

Yeah, it's pointless if there is an overpopulation of teams in an area. Then it just becomes a pricey rec league.

If you can keep it limited to the better kids, there is better coaching, and higher quality reps.

Once it becomes about the parents, aka "daddy ball", stupidity ensues.

Exactly how it played out at my high school. More rec players than travel players made the 9th grade team in tryouts which created a lot of angry dads. I think this is why the coach tried to implement the travel ball only rule because of the blowback from cutting kids whose parents had them playing travel ball
