Apparently the three suspects were teenagers and that just makes it sad.
They literally gambled their lives away on some risky thrill seeking activity that was only worth a few hundred bucks.
Hopefully God is more merciful on them than the homeowner was but they're probably in hell right now.

Why wouldn't be merciful to them? If they intended to kill no one, and weren't going to violently harm anyone, why would even be a question about their judgement.
Stealing isn't a mortal sin; sorry if capitalism and psychopathic western obsessions with property suggested that.
Killing and murder are considered mortal sins.
Needless to say, those young men put their lives in danger and obviously the risk wasn't worth the reward
