Hum... never heard of this before. Off the cuff I'd assume the filter should catch anything that could be caught by the magnet; and I'd think that a magnet as small as the plug wouldn't be very effective.
However, could one attach a set of rare-earth magnets to the entire underside of the pan? That'd give a rather large surface area to collect material. But that's also give a large magnet to collect shite from the outside too.

How would you know what the magnets collect? Whatever it is would remain inside of the pan.
