Broke my ankle in 3 places during snow / Noreaster 3/15. I got 2 screws and a plate. What is the healing process.

Have Key West planned 9 weeks out from surgery trying to determine if I should post pone.

I broke my nose once and it took awhile to heal. Still have a scar and it was a bunch of years ago. The nose bone is actually pretty dissimilar to a ankle bone though so it probably won't be the same since you don't walk on your nose but you do use a ankle to walk with.

Me thinks this would have been a great question for your doctor. You know, the one who did the surgery

You should be fine.

I had ankle surgery and was at the beach in Seaside 6 weeks later.

Bone typically takes 6-8 weeks to heal. I am assuming you broke both your tibia (2 screws) and fibula (plate).

While you should technically be able to walk on it by then, it may still be pretty sore and stiff.

More importantly, I suggest you ask your surgeon and not strangers with no intimate knowledge of the injury/repair. I know I'd be pissed if one of my pts asked people on a message board instead of me about the post op course.

He said weight bearing in 6 weeks, but wife had microfacture knee surgery and she had a couple of weeks of not full weight

That said ankle is different so was unsure if there was a ramp up

Lol I will talk to him or PA this Thursday. I am more getting a sense of potential outcomes. What he says will be law.

2 months may be fine if you don't have any complications and get good PT.

I have a plate and 7 screws done a few years ago. Had post op infection and the frickers had to go back in and clean it out. Set back PT and delayed weight bearing which fricked me pretty good for 3 months.

Also, if you are popping pain killers eat oatmeal for breakfast if you ever want to shite again..

I had two screws put in the other ankle after a fracture and I was playing flag football on it 8 weeks after surgery.

I cut the oxy 3 days post surgery

Was having wild dreams which included me kicking legs. Wasn't good plus I never had sharp pain just annoying discomfort.

It all depends on the surgeon and the injury. I'd expect him to want you to start non weight bearing range of motion exercises around week 4. PT probably not until 6 weeks, at least imo, because sometimes they can be a little too aggressive.

Until then the best thing you can do is not overdo it or try to put weight on it. That could potentially really set you back.

you've gotta think about the nature of your vacation...will you be walking a ton? if so, is walking a lot avoidable?...would limited mobility affect your enjoyment of the vacation?

the doctor or therapist should know how sore you will be at that time...you have to decide whether that is a problem or not.

Thanks for info

I am keeping it up and no weight for sure. I could ice better.

Yeah I will see what he or PA says Thrusday. I think at surgery he didn't really assume where I would be so probably waiting on this xray to judge next steps. Probably why he didn't answer all those questions.

Get ready for fun shite like putting your foot in a bucket of ice water and then into a bucket of hot water and back and forth.

Also, I will never voluntarily take a bath over a shower again after all that shite...

Yeah Marathon walking is avoidable - Key West was going to do some walking. I was optimistic maybe they would want me walking a little.

Might be being a little agressive
