The ban of carry-on electronics on flights was prompted by intelligence gathered about an ISIS plot to target the West, it has been reported.
The threat was judged by the US to be 'substantiated' and 'credible'.
The US and UK announced restrictions on large electronics in carry-on baggage for direct flights from certain Middle Eastern and North African nations on Tuesday.
The move is allegedly based on the suspicion that Islamic State are working on ways to smuggle explosives on to planes by hiding them in electronics.
Crucial information was apparently gathered during a raid against Al Qaeda in Yemen in January that killed Navy SEAL 'Ryan' Owens.
The intelligence centred around al Qaeda's 'successful development' of compact battery bombs that fit inside laptops or other devices, sources claimed.

Probably only a matter of time before all countries ban them.

Forever. Because, unlike Israel, the West is focused intently on finding devices, instead of finding terrorists.

Why? Because it is politically incorrect to do so.

Yes. At worse you have to check it in. It's only a carry on restriction cause they say the bomb has to be manually set off.

Jeh Johnson (former DHS sec) disputes your assertion in an exclusive on Morning Joe today. Explaining that combustible plastics have been on their radar for awhile.

Edit: to be clear, I'm saying that this info did NOT come from Yemen raid.

Do they not have scanners for carryons?

So why haven't they instituted the ban in "awhile"?

bullshite. I have it on good authority from the honorable libs here that the mission was a total failure, Trump looked stupid for OKing it and nothing was gained by running it although it was planned while their savior was running things. Another reason to hate the left.

Plastics are an issue but essentially useless without a detonator, right?

Absolutely correct. Airport security is a clear case of a need for profiling. It works. Hey guess what, most of the people who want to blow planes up are Muslims, but it would be inappropriate to admit that, so let's make that 7 year old white girl take her shoes off, take away her juice box (unless mom and dad paid $12 for it inside the security check point) and OMG grab her dad's laptop.

Meanwhile Muhammed is free to get on a plane with no more scrutiny than any other person. Makes no sense.

I don't know. I don't work at DHS or State. All I know is that Jeh Johnson said they have had this on their radar for awhile during his tenure.

I don't know. Just repeating what former DHS sec said.

I'm sure that particular mission was fruitful but the using electronics intel is old.

The Russian airliner brought down leaving Egypt (I think) a laptop or a coke can was used to hide the explosive.

That seems absolutely ridiculous. Surely the workaround to make this communicate with a smaller device would not be hard for someone who can actually build a bomb that will explode a plane to figure out how to do.

Wow this totally makes killing all those women and children, losing a navy seal, and a helicopter totally worth it
