quote:
If you say you believe in "free trade", you're much more likely to have a leftist-leaning person agree with it than if you say "capitalism" (although the Trumpkins are engaging on their own war on the term "free trade" so it's not as effective that way anymore)
Correct. Most leftist aren't against capitalism; they just don't understand what it means. They actually want capitalism with government forced, massive redistribution systems. Somewhere along the way, someone not-in-the-know started calling that socialism.

yeah when i wear my "Taxation is theft" gear i sometimes get into random conversations about it and i have to explain that i'm not that hardline anarchist (or "big L" libertarian). it's the redistribution schemes that i have a problem with, and that applies all the way to tax credits and policy-based deductions in our taxation system
NPR's Planet Money actually did a good piece on the labeling/selling of policies a few years back. one of the subjects they used as an example was the mortgage deduction and that was funny to listen to the reaction of people.
the most infuriating policy where people just simply don't get it is medicaid. i can't tell you how many times i've met people who post shite about how they work for a living blah blah on FB and then pop out a new kid and post "anybody know a doctor that accepts a medical card in [area]?"
