One day a wild-eyed subordinate burst into a private a meeting Clemenceau was holding and informed him, “Your son has just joined the Socialist Party.” Expecting Clemenceau to be mortified at both the outburst and the news, attendees were aghast. Clemenceau smiled and coolly responded, “Sir, my son is 22 years old. If he had not become a Socialist at 22, I would have disowned him. If he is still a Socialist at 30, I will do it then.”
