You do realize the USSR did collapse and ceased to exist as a country over a quarter century ago?
Yes. But there was no invasion from the West or other Soviet enemies that ran into sack Moscow is what I was getting at.
If anything, they joined the system the US and the West had built.
eta: Point being, our power may reduce and we may cut our own feet from under use by overspending, but American territory is by and large safe from outside powers.

State-state wars are becoming nearly impossible these days. It's taken a long time but everyone understands now that direct conflict between two powers is not beneficial to anyone. With democracy spreading to every corner of Earth it's even less likely.
Asymmetrical warfare, cyber warfare, and trade war are the ways of the future. Regimes like the DPRK are becoming less likely to emerge as the Internet has put governments in check. You'll still get some tyrannical vibes from governments but creating wars is political suicide to any nation that doesn't have a very powerful centralized government with no duty to serve its people.

As for looking "gay" they look better than the shitty, cheap-made glorified high-top tennis shoes that pass for combat boots nowadays.
The boots these days look way more comfortable than the old ones. That would be priority 1 for me.

Yeah, a lot of soldiers and Marines are using the Nike sfb when available. Pretty much all SOCOM guys are using Salomon and Merrell hiking boots, which are more or less sneakers with an aggressive sole and ankle support.

I ETS'd in 2002.
Thank God.
Thank God.

It's such a shame too. If anything the army has been known to be efficient spenders of tax payer money.
This is such an Air Force move. Shameful that the Army is going this way trying to make public money grabs
If budget cuts are coming due to lack of strategic utility for certain areas, complaining to the press and making a nostalgic plea is pretty poor form.

That would be terrible. The US needs to cut military spending and end the world police mentality.

Yeah. I don't believe any of that. Their budgets have always been bloated. They can survive on small cuts.

I mean really how often do we make brigade jumps of 1000 paratroopers?
Small point, the 101st is Air Assault, they haven't done "jumps" in many years.

I'll take a light, breathable, waterproof, nylon boot over solid leather erryday

the 101st isn't needed like it used to be
Really in today's battlefield units like the 101st are exactly what's needed. Everything is done by helo insertion. I'd venture to say they are more needed than the 82nd. A true combat jump will never be done again.

What this graph says to me is 2 things.
1. that we need to quit spending money on useless social justice experimenting and lean up our fighting force. This is not a peace keeping force. Not a social engineering force. A lethal military force.
2. Other countries, particularly our allies in S. Korea, France, UK, Germany need to up their spending and quit relying on us to pay the bill. If they continue to do so we charge them.
I am all for cutting down the wasteful spending (military gender studies, biofuel at $59, obsenly over budget projects) because a lean, efficient organization will always be more flexible and responsive to needs, what ever they are

If it can be done in-house for much cheaper... Sorry.
paying a service member who stays for life...is not as smart as paying a contractor who already has the knowledge to do the job for a certain time period and then let em' go...don't just think pay....think about medical, dental, housing, etc....not to mention retirement...a lot of our money that goes into this big defense pot is for those services..the PX...the commissary...maintenance of facilities like barracks and gyms...it goes on and on...im telling you it takes a lot to fund that huge fighting force...contractors?...its a flat rate that is negotiated...its up to GD, LM, Raytheon...whoever...to do their insurance and benefits...its a part of the negotiated cost...and it isn't forever...

They call the handicapped now.

It's not just service members though. It's hiring a civilian employee vs utilizing a contractor.

Darth,
I have a hard time believing that 2/3rds of our Navy aircraft are un-flyable. Seeing what I have recently around Oceana doesn't fit that bill.

Thanks for the clarification. I was just a POG so I mixed the 2 up. I thought 82nd was Assault. And my former unit was attached to the 101 at Bagram which is kind of cool.
