Seriously, what the frick is that shite? It's like they're making some sort of fashion statement about cyber warfare or something.

You are deluding yourself if you think that our military in its current form is for national defense
It is a debate worth having and political ideologies have had it since the Founding, but I believe that national defense = going far beyond our own borders.

The days of defending your state at the border have been gone since feudal times. Everything is about trade and protecting your assets wherever they are.

And ours are in nearly every corner of the globe.

Can someone clarify for me if the 16 is being completely removed from both army and marines?
I think now they mostly use the M4 which is a shortened version of the M16A2. But I don't think the A2 has been retired though. I never really kept up with it because I was a tanker we had the M9.

The uniforms were designed to looked squared away when in garrison. We were expected to be pressed and boots shined at all times. The uniforms today can't even be ironed and the boots cannot be shined.
Here's the boots I wore (and still own BTW)
Now they have these things...

Whose assets is the problem? It ain't middle class America that's for sure. It's basically siphoning off money from the working class to protect and enrich a few. The day people realize the military is making the average American poorer and less safe will be a great day. It's like a heavily armed post office.
Iraq and Afghanistan were like 30k per US taxpayer. It's outrageous.

Holy shite those patent leather boots look more in place on a gay porn set than a barracks lmao.
And I believe the Corps is still issuing some M16A4, although most are getting the M4 on deployment.

Who pays the lower and middle classes?
It is outrageous. The doctrine of nation building is bullshite.
I won't crap on the tan boots because we've been fighting in the desert for a decade but once we get out I'd like to see the return of woodland and black boots.

There isn't a need for a large Army right now. Nothing wrong with having a lean Army.

You're showing your age, you old coot. Go look at comparisons of AOR1 compared to the landscape in Iraq and Afghan. And the pairing of a multicam/AOR2 top and AOR1 bottoms. shite works.

Reps - let's build up our military so we don't have to use a nuke as a last resort to keep our asses from being blown to smithereens budget be damned.
Right. Trump has been sooo very diplomatic with the travel ban, threatening Mexicans with the wall, etc. Hell, he's not even getting along well with Justin Trudeau.

Yeah the new digital patterns are very effective at breaking up silhouettes.

So did Rome's. It ended in collapse. So did the Macedonian's. It ended in collapse. So did the British, and the Monguls, and the Turks, and the Russian, and the Austrian-Hungarian, etc, etc, etc, etc....
We can't maintain this level of spending. At some point, it will have to end. I just hope it's a controlled decent like the British empire and not a go down in flames version like Rome.

I fought in the Desert back in 91 wearing my trusty black leather Tanker boots. And 26 years later they're still holding together.

None of these fell/weakened due to military spending

We won't go down in flames any more than the USSR did. It may hurt, we may lose power, but I honestly believe having nuclear weapons makes a state nearly invincible to a Rome-like outside invasion and destruction.
With that said, I'm not sure anyone has had a system of alliances quite like we have. Of course all those other powers had their allies, but spending or not pretty much everyone buys into the economic and system of international relations we constructed at the end of WW2.
We may go to war with China over some territorial dispute and lose a lot of blood and treasure, but the homeland will be fine and China benefits from trade and IGOs as much as anyone.
eta: If anything the more Russia and China have been acting up the more countries in their region have been willing to spend more on defense.

Son, those aren't patent leather. Those boots look that way thanks to their owner knowing how to use Kiwi and a brush. Guess that's not a skill they teach any longer. Probably no time for things like that with all the "diversity" and "sensitivity" training they do now. We didn't worry about shite like that back then.
As for looking "gay" they look better than the shitty, cheap-made glorified high-top tennis shoes that pass for combat boots nowadays.

You do realize the USSR did collapse and ceased to exist as a country over a quarter century ago?
