First case reported of "CTE" without history of head trauma

Looks like we have a long way to go to understand this issue
"Obviously brain trauma and repetitive brain trauma can result in cognitive impairment and possibly contribute to a neurodegenerative disease," says Dr. Hazrati. "But since we've seen cases of brains that experienced multiple concussions but don't have CTE, and now a brain with CTE but absence of any head trauma, there is indication that we should be cautious about labelling trauma as the only possible cause of CTE because it looks to be more complicated than that."

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy.

What is chronic traumatic encephalopathy?
Posted on 3/4/17 at 11:03 am to Scooba
That is the changes in the brain that have been seen in all the football players that had the mental problems, suicide etc. Until now we have said, see this evidence of brain damage is because all of the concussions and smaller hits that the football players received.
This throws a curveball. This person has the same changes in their brain as the football players but he had no known history of head trauma.

Guess we can't call it CTE anymore.

What's cte?
It's where old football players that squandered all of their money start looking for some easy cash. Like when a poor person pulls out in front of an 18 wheeler or falls down at walmart.

I'm wondering if any supplements, steroid or HGH were used by this person.

Did you not see the movie Concussion?
If not, you should.
Any parent that has kids who play sports needs to watch that movie.

I am! You should really go pay your redheaded wife some attention. She started a thread this morning looking for the bbc.

What if they had head trauma but the head trauma was so bad they didn't remember having head trauma? I'm calling BS.

Great movie, must see to understand CTE and how the NFL screwed the pooch and tried to bury the findings.

I don't get the reference.
Sorry if I feel a little sympathy for players I grew up watching on Sundays that ended up committing suicide because they were so fricked up in the head, leaving behind fatherless children and widows. Yea, its because they lost all their money.

now a brain with CTE but absence of any head trauma

Hence this is why we know medicine is not an exact science and the knowledge evolves with time. What is thought true today may not be so tomorrow.

I have a close friend that did the same. I do feel sympathy. But there is no definitive proof that cte is caused just by head trauma. According to your analogy, all people fricked up in the head have cte. Kurt Cobain must've had cte then. Maybe from the loud music? Again, I have sympathy for anyone struggling with something, but there isn't enough proof of what exactly causes cte
