We were taught that Freemasons are to call chi phi's 1st sons. We also have access to masonic lodges... This has been confirmed to me by a few masons who are aware of it.. but clearly it's not a common practice. Especially around the deep south with no ChiPhi chapters.
Hum... each Grand Lodge is slightly different so that may be the case in some jurisdictions. However, in Louisiana there is no official association with that fraternity. If an individual lodge chooses to sponsor someone (like a college fraternity, local Boy Scouts troop, whathaveyou) then they are more than welcome to do so.
I'd be very surprised to find that a Grand Lodge requires its members to open their doors to a collegiate fraternity. It would be my guess that while there is likely a close association between the two, there is no ritualistic nor binding contract between the them. This is not dissimilar from the connections between the lodge and Acacia fraternity.
Next time I'm discussing something with a brother from the north east I'll ask him about it. (I'm assuming that Chi Phi is much stronger in that region?)
