Concrete Driveway Const Quest

Having a driveway poured (about 100'). New drive will abut an existing slab. Site was excavated to probably about 15 or more inches below grade (top of existing slab to ground) due to lots of roots and organic matter in soil. Will pour 5 inches of concrete. What is best fill material to bring excavated area up to grade - crushed concrete, gravel, good dirt, sand other?

either compacted structural fill dirt or compacted aggregate will work fine. call around and see whats cheaper
structural fill material will be cheaper per ton but you'll need more of it

I would consider sloping the driveway down some. But just about any cheap stone will work.

Where is the driveway located, Tim? Your location tells us more for what fill material is readily available.

Hard to beat a good gravel/stone base.

Will slope. Starting at grade of existing slab and sloping away at about 1%

Read that sand tends to move and not stay in place.

I would probably bring in a good base soil to compact to within 5-6" of grade - around here it would be red clay, not sure what is available in your area. Then a load of stone spread on top and then your slab. Here at least, dirt is much cheaper than gravel.
That's basically what I just did to build up the pad for my shop.

Another good idea is to put a crown in your driveway. Doesn't have to be much but a 1/2"-1" crown would keep standing water off.
