During the Vietnam war, lefties praised anyone who did whatever they had to do to avoid being sent to Vietnam so why are they now condemning President Trump for doing exactly what they wanted him to do back then?

It doesn't make a lick of sense...

Then you are nuts.

I was in the local chapter of SDS when I was at UGA and I went to several protests including the March on Washington.

All the lefties I knew were telling everyone eligible for the draft to do anything they could to avoid serving.

That's when people began burning their draft cards to make a public stand against the Vietnam war.

quote:

...it is painfully obvious that the GOP hates...and I mean hates...them some Vietnam veterans....very few GOPers could have been bothered to go and most got a deferment from their daddies contacts...meanwhile democrats like Max Cleland, John Kerry, John Murtha.......thats just off the top of my head....have been villified by the folks in the GOP who didn't go...

I don't remember Max Cleland or John Murtha but I do remember that John Kerry wasn't vilified until after he threw his Purple Heart away to protest the war.

quote:

and even poor John McCain is now a bad guy for having gotten caught...

Meh, I don't know of a single GOPer besides President Trump who says McCain is a bad guy and even President Trump wasn't really being serious.

quote:

why would the left still be making anything of it....it is just one of many things about the GOP which reveal their inability to be honest....

The person being dishonest is you.

Are you really going to claim that the Left didn't tell people to avoid serving in the Vietnam war any way they could and praised those people who did avoid it?

quote:

The reason that GOPers hate Vietnam Vets is because we had a perfect record until then....Donald Trump expressed the majority opinion of the right when he said that McCain was only a hero because he got caught and he (Trump) liked people who didn't get caught....the GOP not only likes those who didn't get caught more than those who did but they also like winners better and Vietnam Vets weren't winners at war....

Fake news.

The GOP supported the war and the soldiers who served in it.

They just hated the way the war was being fought. They wanted to fight it to win not to fight it half-assed like it was being fought.

quote:

Have y'all ever really supported a candidate who was a Vietnam vet?

Don't you remember? The GOP nominated John McCain as their candidate for POTUS.

Duh.

quote:

Here is the one thing that you need to know about the right and Vietnam Veterans and how low the right holds them...there ain't a soul on the right who doesn't beleive that there weren't Vietnam Veterans spit on when the returned from Vietnam...yet other than anecdotes there is not a speck of evidence to support this myth...not a single person was ever arrested for beating some spitting hippies arse or, more importantly, there is not a single shred of evidence of any spitting hippies needing medical attention for having spit on a returning veteran...yet the right believes this with all their heart...which in fact what they are suggesting is that Vietnam veterans were a bunch of pussies because not a single one of them put a spitting hippie in the hospital...that is much more insulting than insinuating that it is possible to get a purple heart for a paper cut.....

I never spit on a Vietnam vet when they came home and I don't know of any "hippies" who did but I know several of my friends in SDS did.

If you weren't alive at the time or not old enough to know what was going on at that time then don't tell me who was there and involved in the protests what I need to know about what was happening back then and what the right wingers were doing.

My dad was a draftee in 1965. Got shipped over there with the Army 1st Cav (Airmobile). After he got back, he would go to the local National Guard Armory and harass the guys there (because in the 1960's you could dodge the draft by joining the Guard). He despised draft dodgers.

I don't know if he ever experienced the whole "baby killer" talk, but I doubt it. Knowing his temperament he would have killed them. Then again, most of that shite happened in bigger cities or on college campuses and not in small towns (where he was from). He never talked to me about the war or the aftermath. Everything I know is from my mom or my uncles.

It was pretty rough, though, for a lot of the guys. A lot of them just became alcoholics and drug addicts, committed suicide, or got put in prison. My dad went through that spell in his 20's. He was in a bad enough mental state that his family wanted him to be committed to a mental hospital. He got arrested a few times for serious (violent) crimes, but because he was a vet, the judges let him off.

Luckily he snapped out of it, got a good job, got married, and had kids. He still had "episodes" later in life and could fly off the handle and become violent, but he managed things fairly well all things considered.

This is why I am not crazy about Vietnam. I think it was a waste of 50,000 lives and untold misery for the vets who did survive. I am not happy that the communists took over Asia, but I don't think it was our war to fight. The people in Vietnam were dirt poor regardless of what government was in place.
