Children then. Priests buggering children. Tens of thousands of cases worldwide- one of the largest criminal conspiracies in our lifetime, and people are lined up a thousand deep to explain it away and parse words.

"Children" according to modern definitions of that word, but not pre-pubescent humans.
If a high school teacher has sex with a physically mature student, we don't call them a pedophile, at least not those of us with brains. We don't think a 24 year old coach attracted to a 16 year old student is a sicko, because that would be retarded and ignorant.
So if a Priest does the same with an altar boy who is physically mature, it's awful but it's simply not "toddlers" or "children". It's fundamentally different.
