My quick experience (because we aren't allowed to talk about cross fit): I've been going to crossfit for about 6 months and they are just now allowing me to really start adding weight. Focus has been on form and doing it right to avoid injury. Found the areas I need help in flexibility and strength and worked on those.
I didn't get the social stuff as much as first, but now I see it as motivation to get there for the workouts as I know the other people that will be there.

Used to do crossfit, I think there are a lot of basic tenets that are good fitness practices
Bad form/technique instruction, bad fitness routine programming and bad group of people can make it awful though.
