This has been the state of the sport for decades; in 2003, a 17-11 Alabama with no real SECT success got into the field.
The bubble is a little thinner than normal this year, at this point, but is likely to firm up a good bit the next week or so as some of these 17-12 type teams win 3 of 4 remaining games.

And of course, I expect some mediocre bubble teams, but Syracuse is being presented as a "lock." I guess it's this strong conclusion that caught me off guard.
