I don't watch CBB near as much as I used to, so I'm clearly not up to date with the current makeup of the field. Anyways, I just clicked on ESPN, and I see Syracuse beat Duke at the buzzer at home, and I see this headline: Cardiac Cuse making another late-season push into March
Then I saw a 17-12 record, an 86 RPI before the game (although a 32 BPI), and a so-so 5-6 (now 6-6) RPI against the Top 50. That seemed strikingly mediocre, especially since it seems be a foregone conclusion that this win put them solidly within the tournament. But I was really thrown off by this justification:

So is CBB really that mediocre that we've resorted to asinine justifications to support a >80 RPI team being solidly within the tournament?
the Orange now can point to three wins against teams that were in the top 10 when they played them -- Florida State, Virginia and Duke -- as proof that they belong.

There is a thread for this you know... Literally right under your post.

BUT this why I don't like to start threads: they end up being pointless. Now I will shamefully go to bed.

This has been the state of the sport for decades; in 2003, a 17-11 Alabama with no real SECT success got into the field.
The bubble is a little thinner than normal this year, at this point, but is likely to firm up a good bit the next week or so as some of these 17-12 type teams win 3 of 4 remaining games.

all good man We ended up talking about the postseason in there too so you're fine.

And of course, I expect some mediocre bubble teams, but Syracuse is being presented as a "lock." I guess it's this strong conclusion that caught me off guard.

CBB has been down for a while. I barely watch the sport, save for a few Ohio games (mostly on ESPN3).

It's because it's Syracuse

Same thing with Ohio St this last CFB. I'm not saying I wouldn't have had them in the playoff game, but if you take away the Ohio St brand they're playing USC in a bowl instead.

When Florida State beat Ole Miss, they were a top ten team.
They belonged in the playoff.

The good teams are just not that good. That's my foremost grievance.

Bubble is shite this year. Cuse has had some abysmal losses but 3 top-10 wins (all while unranked) should get the job done.

Meh, ACC is by far the best conference this year.
B1G is absolute trash. If Cuse wins 1 game in the ACC tourney they're in.
Oh and Gonzaga gets obliterated in the Sweet 16, probably Nova too...

Gonzaga will be in Elite 8. Have you watched them this year?
My Final 4 is Nova, Duke/UNC (whichever one gets put in Greenville first round), Purdue, Gonzaga/UCLA
