Yes, so they can train for those jobs that are never coming back.
What we need is for education to focus highly on STEM branches so that we can prepare tomorrows workforce for a reality in which most things are manufactured by robots. We definitely dont need to be subsidizing underwater basket weaving or philosophy majors.
Im also not saying we won't need technical jobs like electricians, plumbers and whatnot, but we're talking about millions of jobs that built the middle class of this country gone and never coming back. We need a paradigm shift in education with more people going to college for hard sciences and engineering here. Not less.
Most people aren't suited for STEM jobs

I dont believe this shite for one second.
Sure, some people aren't, but I happen to be pretty optimistic about the capabilities of your average human being. I think its a matter of willpower and work ethic for most people.
The size of my class probably shrank 70% or more between Freshman and senior year and I know for a fact that half those people were just fricking off. Your mileage may vary on that.
More importantly, it we dont have a fricking choice. I dont know if you caught the thread a couple weeks ago regarding productivity increases, but in a nutshell it used to take 25 people to produce 1M in product. Now it takes frickin SIX to make that same amount adjusted for inflation and productivity gains account for the overwhelming majority of that. I can see a future coming up quicker than many would like where a designer can draw something in CAD and then and automated plant just produces it without even retooling. Thats where we're going.
This shift is going to necessitate that our workforce become focused on creation, engineering and design as opposed to low skill assembly.
