Tower on Independent Lens PBS is on at 9 about the 1966 UT Tower sniper.
I had family there in those days.

Thanks. I can catch PBS on my rabbit ears.

Austin was a pretty sleepy town back in those days.

Yes it was. I had friends from UT that didn't even know this story. They never talked about it.

Friend of mine's mother saw Charles Whitman at the grocery store off North Burnet Road (the strip center on the east side of the road, up from HEB, across from the middle school).
Anyway...
Mrs. Friend's mother noticed a young woman and a little dog sitting in a brand-new Chevrolet sedan. Mom says hello to woman, asks dogs name and remarks on nice car. She said about that time Charles Whitman came back outside and was glaring at her, really chilling shite. Mrs. Mom says "I was just saying hello and remarking about your car" and she said Whitman snapped from scowl to beaming.
The man had some problems.
Mrs. Mom heard the dog's name mentioned on the news after the murders (Sochi) and remembered their faces.

They knew it was an incident. Not much more. Just wasn't really discussed. Now my family that was in school there at that time talked about it some.

I've always heard a lot of men just showed up with rifles to help. No SWAT teams back then and no mass shootings like this.

Yes, that is true. Two lawmen deputized a citizen who worked at the Co-op bookstore to go up the Tower with them (that would never happen today).
They made an appeal for hunting rifles. Cops were woefully unprepared with 38s and shotguns.

Just finishing it. Mesmerizing the way it's presented with animation.
