I honestly don't even know how this would play out. There is literally nothing worth going to all out war over other than some apocalyptic shortage of resources. Neither putin nor trump gain anything in any scenario, mutual destruction is literally assured.

Can we pinky promise not to use nukes and have a conventional war? After slaughtering each other for a while let's see how long the one on the losing end plays by the rules

All defensive measures against intercontinental ballistic missiles are a % game, plenty will get through. Subs are impossible to track effectively. Not to mention satellites are gone immediately, so is the power grid, and likely movement of good and mass production of crops. Even if you arent affected by blast or fallout there will be a violent thinning of the herd among each nations own population fighting for resources.

The only possible scenario I can even imagine one side making a move directly on the other is if they believe they have a game changer technologically the other has no answer for.

OK, I think I know where the OP is coming from. The idea is that the world conflict is now between the Nationalists and the Globalists.
Putin is a nationalist. Maybe the head honcho of all nationalists. UK and France leaving the EU would be nationalist

The US under Obama (and Hillary) is globalist along with Angela Merkel.

But Trump has taken over the globalist US and is moving it to nationalism making him superior to Putin on the nationalist hierarchy. So, if the globalists can make a war between the US and Russia it will destroy the nationalist movement and the globalists will take over.

Sounds like a good movie, doesn't it?
