Orlando's current options were a deal like this, lose him for nothing, or overpay him. So THIS deal is good for them and should be graded as such.

what people are taking issue with is that ORL knew what their options would be with ibaka at the end of this season when they traded oladipo and a pick to get him in the first place

this is no surprise

It seems like the lack of fit, compounded with his impending FA and the lack of desire to re-sign him, that prompted this move, rather than just the threat of him leaving this offseason. I'm sure the move was made last summer with the thought of re-signing him if it worked out on the court. It didn't work out, thus the trade.

It's fair to rate last summer's trade as a failure, but it's short sighted to rate this trade a failure because of the OKC trade, IMO.

That's fine, but that is still a critique of the first trade. I admire them for accepting sunk cost and moving on. Dell rufuses to do that 9 out of 10 times

They took a swing hoping Ibaka would make them a playoff team and they would resign him and move forward with that culture. They were wrong, but they were big enough men to admit that. That should be applauded, not mocked IMO. Unless you are one of those rare people who are right 100% of the time
