It could have been made even more meaningful if Snyder and Goyer had simply saved the Superman/Lois love plot for a different movie.

All they had to do was replace her with Lana Lang and it would benefit the film greatly. They already had her in the bus being the one person who was nice to him. They should have used her as his main tether to humanity after Pa dies. It would have made way more sense for her to be the one that figured out Clark was going around the world saving people from disasters while he was in his lonely wanderer phase. Zod threatening to kill (and possibly even succeeding) Supes childhood sweetheart would have held FAR more impact than the recently met Lois who has the incredible power to ALWAYS be in the right place at the right time.
