Generally doesn't work in this country. Recidivism rate is extremely high. Can be contributed to lack of job opportunity after conviction. However, a lot of the offenders didn't exactly have skills that relate to employment before being convicted.

We've never actually tried it.
The Dutch have work release programs and shite. The jails in the US just make people worse.
Clearly our countries are very different, but to even suggest the US has given any decent effort in this arena is farcical.

Here's my explanation about why our prison systems suck in the US:
We take individuals who have demonstrated an inability to be responsible citizens and make productive decisions, lock them up in a facility where they get to make almost no decisions, and then somehow expect that they will make better decisions and be more responsible when they are released. It's insanity, really.
