I don't think you have to worry about this show following conventional story lines I'm not sure if they can ever take it to a Mission of the Week format. Right now it's like a serialized Alice in Wonderland kind of story. Him getting clear headed and becoming a normal hero would be a completely different show.

Possibly spoilers???
After watching the newest episode, my theory is....
1) David had a non-existent dog named King.
2) David enters the Astral Plane.
3) He meets someone who is stuck in the Astral Plane.
So now I'm wondering if the dog was/is Shadow King's way of staying close to David as a youth? or as a way of infiltrating David's mind or memories.
I'm also starting to lean towards the yellow eye demon not being villain.
