Today was the deadline for MLS expansion groups to submit applications. Some are interesting, others were foregone conclusions.

Indy
St Louis
Nashville
Sacramento
San Antonio
North Carolina
Cincy
St Pete's FL
San Diego

Feel Free to add. Talk is that Sacramento and St louis are the favorites for 25/26

I made the following post in the San Diego thread but it seems relevant to your thread as well so I will post it again here:

quote:

Mike Stone, the leader of a prospective MLS ownership group, hand-delivered San Diego's expansion application bid to MLS Commissioner Don Garber in an event held on Monday afternoon on the deck of the USS Midway in San Diego. The city's mayor, Kevin Faulconer, and MLS legend Landon Donovan also attended the event.

Barring a wrench in the plans, such as student pressure that forces San Diego State to withdraw from the planned partnership, I feel that this strong bid by San Diego will secure one of the slots in MLS. It is clear that Garber likes the idea of a club there, they have the full support of the mayor and local government, and they are not asking for public finances. Moreover, San Diego State needs a stadium to play football in other than the old, cavernous Qualcomm Stadium that the city wants to demo in order not to pay millions in maintenance. Consider the economic mixed use development plans and a new large park on the site by a river and just about all boxes are checked.

Regarding Saint Louis, it appears that the city government threw the ownership group a lifeline by approving $60M in public finances toward the planned stadium. So the ship has been rocked but it seems that the path to MLS has been steadied, at least for the immediate future.

If Sacramento is #25, St. Louis is #26, and San Diego is #27, then that leaves Cincinnati, San Antonio, Detroit, Nashville, and Tampa to battle it out for the very last spot. I have a soft place for Cincinnati, all apologies to the supporters of Nashville. I think those tremendous supporters of Cincinnati deserve it and I hope the ownership group develops a solid plan for them.

Isn't St. Louis having trouble getting funding for a stadium? Would MLS award them an expansion team without concrete plans for a stadium?

So I take it they're still holding a spot for Beckhams Miami team? What a waste, how many years has it been now?

I want Nashville more than anything, but I don't think it's likely until maybe if the league expands to 30 teams. I'm not getting my hopes up. I've actually adopted OC until my dream can come true.

Indy - Seemed a bit late to the game, but also seems like an ideal city for MLS. Not this round, but I can definitely see them maybe in the next if the city is serious.

St Louis - Garber (and everyone else) wants MLS in St Louis. I don't think it will happen for 25-26, solely due to the politics involved for getting stadium funded. It's a problem. But it will happen eventually.

Nashville - We've got the cash, a committed owner, and a city that seems willing to play ball on a stadium. Mayor Megan Barry has asked for a stadium funding plan by June of this year. I can't see it happening for 25-26, and even 27-28 seems like a long shot to be honest. We already have the Preds, and Titans, which will probably scare off MLS.

Sacramento - I think they are in. They've done all the work needed, and can be ready to play as early as 2018. I think they are in for 25 or 26.

San Antonio - Another major market, but another crowded state. I don't know how to evaluate this one.

North Carolina - Could come down to a battle between Cincinnati, Nashville, and NC for 28. I can't see MLS going with all 3, and even 2 would be a stretch.

Cincinnati - How committed are the owners and the city to MLS? They could be a great fit given the incredible crowd support, but will they get the support from owners/city/state? And expect heavy resistance from Columbus as they don't want their market share to dwindle.

TB Rowdies - MLS wants them, and they want MLS. I think they and Sacramento are the likeliest for 25-26.

San Diego - Not this time, but probably 27-28. Too much potential, and Garber really really wants them.

Detroit - Another one that Garber really wants, and it seems they have the support. Wouldn't be surprised at all to see them get 27 or 28.

So for me the big question is if Beckham/Miami happens. I truly hope that it does not. MLS needs to learn from MLB and just look at the pathetic crowds for other Miami sports franchises. Besides there is just too much happening there. They need to abandon this, and open up the 24th slot to someone else.

I think Raleigh has all the elements that could yield a very successful product. I think the biggest element however, and this holds true for most franchises, is location.

Im a huge fan of the downtown stadium. It just makes sense from a demographics standpoint. People want to live in downtowns, younger people want to live in downtowns, younger people in this country like soccer more than older people. Younger people are fans of walking vs driving. Raleigh needs to yield on this. Forget expanding the stadium is Cary, no one who doenst live in the suburbs wants to drive to the suburbs to watch it. It wont be a big enough attraction by itself.

and a location similar to this:

Provides relatively easy access for NC State students and downtown residents.

A nice summary of all bids...

Espnfc

Sounds like Sacramento and St Louis unless they blow it. If Sacramento can't get their ownership situation fixed, and if St Louis loses the stadium vote in April, then it sounds like San Diego is ready to pounce first to take one of the slots away. Next most likely sounds like Detroit.
