I think Obama made some attempts to compromise with the Republicans early on. It eventually became clear that the Republicans were not going to rubber stamp any healthcare reform at all. This was an impasse. He wasn't perfect but you would be lying if you said he didn't attempt to work with them at first.

"Elections have consequences – and at the end of the day, I won." That was said several days after the inauguration to Eric Cantor by President Obama.

I don't know what world you live in, but in mine that's not the words of someone who is trying to compromise.
