It didn't occur to me this was spelled wrong. I just figured that "roles" were some new PC-speak we had to be sensitive to.

Their role is student, the educator taking roll is in the role of authority figure, or should be. Now if the student wishes to change their role from one gender to that of another, it is not of the educator's role to be responsible to know that.
