No onions, no roux? How is this gumbo?
LINK
Maybe the author is thinking that black eyed peas make it a Southern thing so she called it gumbo.

John Folse and Leah Chase make one and Leah Chase make the herb gumbo too. Very good stuff no matter what you call it but I'm guessing these two are more qualified than me to name a dish.

I don't think the recipe linked above is close to Folse's gumbo or Leah Chase's gumbo z'herbes.
Didn't Link have a black eye pea gumbo? I think he did and I bet it had a roux and a lot more flavors. The recipe on 12 tomatoes isn't gumbo and it doesn't even look like a good black eyed pea soup, which I've made before. I used to make one for New Year's Day on occasion. It was tasty, but it wasn't gumbo.

I looked at the recipe and the photos. Saw a few things.
Onion is not listed in the ingredients, but directions say, "sauté onions". I believe I see carrots and potatoes in the photos, but not listed in the ingredients. I have no idea where the roux is. With so many other errors, she might have made a roux of some sort, but the photos do not show any roux.
I have never used basil in gumbo and I doubt I ever will.
Might be a good soup but it is not a gumbo.

The paragraph above the recipe does say you can throw in whatever you have on hand. Doesn't look very good to me.
