To reiterate a few already mentioned that are in my top ten:

Ben Hur
The Graduate
Bridge on the River Kwai
Little Big Man
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Not yet mentioned but extremely worthy:

Slaughterhouse Five
High Noon
All Quiet on the Western Front
I Walk the Line (the original, not the recent "Walk the Line")

Best "coming of age" film never ever mentioned by anyone anywhere except two thumbs up from Siskel and Ebert:

Coal Miner's Daughter

Don't be put off by the subject matter (story of country singer Loretta Lynn). I am not a country music fan at all but the film is genuinely entertaining. Sissy Spacek was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in the title role.
