I'd disconnect the hot from the switch, but that's just me.

ETA Can you flip the main for the apartment?

So you're gonna handle the hot wire on the switch to avoid handling the hot wire on the light fixture?

Just do what CP3 said

If someone ran the hot to the fixture and switched the neutral, the meter will tell you that. Disconnecting the hot at the switch does nothing that flipping the switch would not do except expose you to risk.
