I've seen southerners call people mam and sir out west and up north and they looked at them like it was disrespectful as frick.

you really need to get out more

It is just after 9 AM here in Saudi Arabia and I have been addressed as sir a dozen times already.

My wife is a Brit and every single member of her family practices this.

There is good reason Southerners are condidered the favorite Americans of most outside the USA, it is because we in general are polite and respectful of others and it is a shame so many parents of gen X'ers failed so badly.
