Who judges what's proper manners here?

I've seen southerners call people mam and sir out west and up north and they looked at them like it was disrespectful as frick.

Why do you think the south has a monopoly on dictating what constitutes manners?

I teach my kids proper manners. That does not include teaching them to say sir or ma'am because that isn't considered "proper manners" where we live. If anything, it causes others to think you're being sarcastic or just plain weird.

There is no universal definition of proper manners.
