You can use those analytical numbers all you want but I don't think you'll find too many people who will agree with you that Price actually provided a surplus performance relative to his contract.
He made $30MM to throw a 4 ERA with a 1.2 WHIP, not to mention his implosion against Cleveland in the postseason. That's horrendous anyway you slice it. He's not being paid to put up back-end of the rotation numbers.

He's one year into the contract

And that one year still suggests that he provided value to the red sox

I'm not arguing that he didn't provide value. He threw 230 innings, that's valuable. It's not worth $30MM.

And given how we understand how much monetary value WAR has, he was worth $36MM
he gave them 230 innings with a fip at 3.6 and a fip- at 86. Sure, they probably wanted a fip of sub 3 and a fip- of sub 70, but him giving them 230 innings at those numbers is far from a failure and the value shows that
And fine, chalk that David price contract up as a bad one after his rough year this year. Even though I disagree, it still doesn't change the fact that we have a bunch of other recent examples of players getting $200MM in their 30s and it working out

You could argue that his bad playoff start takes away bit of his value provided over the regular season. After all, the biggest thing they brought him in to do was be a postseason ace because they were going to get there with or without David Price.
