So we are setting up temporary operations in Mexico, specifically Matamoros and Tampico.
My plan is to swing and spend about 24 hours, and then leave. I won't be leaving the area around the airport for either city. Will be going with a Mexican business partner, but he is from the south part of Mexico.
Am I going to die? In seriousness, does anyone have any advice, I've looked at the State Department website but it basically says that I shouldn't travel to Matamoros or Tampico at all. That's not really an option for me.

My only advice is do not do a google search on Matamoros crime...

Is armed security an option?

I went to Matamoros in early 2000 and it was rough back then. If you have to go you have to go, just keep your guard up and stay in well populated areas. Do not put yourself in any position where someone could kidnap you or extort you for money.
Probably won't be that bad of course, but, keep your guard up.

Went fishing at Lake Guerrero Mexico in 2004 with my father and drove through Matamoros. As soon as we crossed the border his check engine light came on...I told him if we brake down in Matamoros, I'm staying in the truck, doors locked, until it is fixed.
