I think the prequels could have worked in the same timeline they are in now with a decent script and MUCH better actors portraying the focal point of the story...Anakin's rise and fall.
When you dump Jake Lloyd and Hayden Christensen on the audience representing the main arc of the three movies...Im not sure he could have picked much worse. The rest of the cast was pretty good IMO but those two just ruined the prequels singlehandedly IMO. I openly laughed at how terrible Hayden was when I first watched II and III in the theaters.

There was no need to see Anakin as a little kid. They should have started the prequel trilogy with Anakin being in his late teens/early 20's or whatever works as far as the timeline goes (but have him as old as possible). That's part of why I liked TFA so much, because Ren was basically the version of Anakin we should have seen in the prequels.
And as for the scene in the OP, that is a decent scene that looks better than it is because of the pile of shite that came before it (first 2 prequels) and the pile of mediocrity that surrounded it (the rest of ROTS). It's ironically one of Lucas' best moments from the prequel trilogy precisely because it's so non-Lucas...hell, I'm surprised he allowed a scene with no dialogue into the movie.

I agree to an extent. The dialogue was absolutely awful in particular in Episode 2 and 3. I thought Jake Lloyd was fine. He wasn't really a focal point of Episode 1. Hayden looked the part, but I did not like his portrayal at all. I am not sure if it's the acting so much as the direction of the character. He comes across as too annoying, whiny, and moody. He's a far more likable character in TCW.

I agree somewhat. I think TPM and AotC should have basically been 1 movie. I like the idea of TPM with how they find Anakin. Showing him like that really brings the magnitude of his fall and also the true power and key to his redemption. The problem is an entire movie around that is just a waste.
