No direction is West. Longitude becomes mathematically singular at the poles and it doesn't really make sense to talk of differences in longitude, i.e.: no East or West. Since you are as far South as you can possibly get at the South Pole, and East and West don't exist, the only direction you can move from the South Pole whilst remaining on the surface of the planet is North. You take one step, though, and East and West have mathematical meaning again, even if they still aren't really useful. Basically, if you take one step North from the South Pole, then immediately turn ninety degrees and start walking East or West, after one or two steps, you're essentially walking North again.

Singularities are tricksy.
