3.08 vs. 3.42 Gear Ratio

I have a buddy who is looking at getting a new vehicle with a 3.08. His current truck has a 3.42 and he pulls a four-wheeler during duck season and a 22 ft. aluminum bay boat (probably 3,000 lbs. with all gear) 10-15 times during the rest of the year. Will he notice a significant difference if he goes with the 3.08?

Full-size truck? I would be shocked if he noticed an appreciable difference or any difference at all really. Neither of those two things are near his maximum capacity.

Its actually a 4wd Tahoe with a 5.3 V8. He is getting a really good deal but wants to make sure he wont have any problems.

Yes. Ask me how I know. I hate 3.08s they don't get better gas mileage as the dealer will advertise. I've had the 5.3 with 6spd for almost 7 years now. Don't care enough to regear, but will never buy a truck with that gear set again.

Oh the truck will pull 7000+ lbs if you have the hd cooling system, that's no problem, but you will notice the loss in "power"

It is rated for 7,300 GVWR so I know it will pull it. He is just trying to decide if that loss in power is a deal breaker.
If he does end up buying the Tahoe I am buying his truck from him, thats why I am so curious.![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/IconLOL.gif)

If it's a good deal and he only pulls a 4 wheeler and an aluminum boat I just don't see if mattering that much. If he were towing a 25' deep V offshore boat, sure. Or a trailer with 2 UTVs, then alright, but an alumnium boat and a 4 wheeler? I pulled that kind of stuff with my Ranger for years. Maybe he will notice the loss in "power" but I can't imagine it being that big of a deal for the scenarios he describes.

You'll honestly notice it way more around town/interstate not pulling more than towing. Or I do anyway. I went from 3.73s to 3.08s, and I also currently have a wrangler with 3.73s. Different motor but you can feel the acceleration difference.
Also I bet a large sum of money your ranger had taller gear set than 3.08s.

i had a 2010 GMC with 3.08's. It got good mileage but sucked once you latched anything to the receiver. Get the higher gears.
