I think this type of thing sticks out in your mind because you hate it so much. I notice gay people on TV about as much as I notice them in real life.

And what defines 'mainstream' to you? Would you prefer if only 'mainstream' things were on TV? How fricking boring would that be?

That 2% figure is an absolute minimum, rock-bottom number. That's around the number that self-identify as gay.

And it's very likely that being straight/gay/bi isn't as clear-cut as we think. It's probably a sliding scale... Think about it: how many people think being gay is a 'lifestyle choice'? The only way you can think it's a choice is if you are somewhere around the middle of that sliding scale. A choice implies that you have two relatively equally-appealing options.

Homosexuality is probably a lot more 'mainstream' than you think.
