I think so but I'd like to hear others input. I think the dot is chargeable and not a full time plugged in piece. I was thinking about trying the Dot first to see how we like it, and if we do, get the full size later and sync it up with the Dot to cover more of the house later.

Incorrect. You are thinking of the new Tap.
Only difference between Echo and Dot is the Echo has a much higher quality speaker. I don't care about that because I have my home theater for music.
