I just thought everything about it worked for me. Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling have great chemistry from working together in the past. The songs were great. The choreography was great. The themes it hit on were great. The pacing was good.
******Spoilers*****
The ending is superb. The scene in the club with Ryan Gosling playing their song while we reminisce on their time together and see the life they could've had is so moving. It's so beautiful. My favorite thing on screen this year.
They both achieve their dreams, and they are instrumental in helping each other do it. Your dreams and those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities can completely change you and take you away from your friends, loved ones, family, etc. We have these moments in our life and these people in the seasons of our life that impact us in profound ways, and oftentimes they don't play a huge role down the road. Chasing your dreams often requires sacrifice, and this movie displayed it perfectly. It's not always mutually exclusive, but many times it is.
I loved that this movie ended with them making eye contact (also happened in Whiplash although the tone of that movie is much different). That moment Sebastian and Mia share in the club is just perfect. It's genuine and real. It's sweet. It's heartbreaking. You want them to be together, but you're happy they both got what they wanted.
I'm gonna go see it again, and I can't wait.
