Have y'all heard about S&P+ rankings?

quote:
The S&P+ Ratings are a college football ratings system derived from the play-by-play and drive data of all 800+ of a season's FBS college football games (and 140,000+ plays). The components for S&P+ reflect opponent-adjusted components of four of what Bill Connelly has deemed the Five Factors of college football: efficiency, explosiveness, field position, and finishing drives. (A fifth factor, turnovers, is informed marginally by sack rates, the only quality-based statistic that has a consistent relationship with turnover margins.)
I was thinking they would be a good objective way to compare the offenses of the offensive coordinators we're looking at and compare to other coaches.
Here are the offensive rankings.
quote:
Off. S&P+ rating: A team's offense-specific S&P+ rating, presented in the form of an adjusted scoring average.
Oklahoma (1st)
Pitt (4th)
Alabama (16th)
Oregon (21st)

Of course I don't think these rankings are absolute, but still interesting and worth considering since the eye test is usually wrong and looking at some stats doesn't always tell the whole story

if you had to choose 1 stat to rank an offense or defense, S&P+ is the best and its not even close imo.

Yeah man. I actually got the site from your post earlier, just saw your thread too. Thanks for info.
I love in-depth metrics like this.

another note here is that Pitt had the number 4 ranked offense despite playing 4 teams inside the S&P+ top 20 on defense
#6 Clemson - 43 points
#14 Miami - 28 points
#16 Penn State - 42 points
#20 VTech - 36 points
thats an average of 37 ppg
LSU averaged 28 ppg this year

I laugh at nobody is commenting on this thread because it's dead on. Great post. Great positive post. Way to bring something legit instead of talking out of your arse and bitching about some binder.

Playing those good defenses actually helps with the ranking though.
Since Pitt did better offensively against those defensive teams than other schools did, their ranking is higher.

Interesting. Personally, I'm excited about Canada if we can reel him in. He seems to adapt to his players strengths very well. It's gonna be so goddamn refreshing seeing a new offense. I know in a lot of cases it will look pro style but just seeing new plays will give me a chub.

Don't frick around any longer. Get it done tomorrow. (Today)
As soon as the ink is dry, we'll have our QB back in the fold too!

You don't say? Using your argument, beating good teams probably makes you ranked higher, as well. Alabama really isn't that good. They just beat some good teams and didn't lose so they look a lot better than they truly are.

If LSU's offense scores that many points against any of those opponents, they win all of those games probably handily.
If it is indeed Canada, I'm interested to see what he can do with our talent. I don't care who you are, but 43 on Clemson and 42 on Penn State is impressive for any team.

quote:Clemson especially imo. theres simply no way to spin that, its impressive as hell on every level, and thats even before you consider the disparity in pure talent.
but 43 on Clemson and 42 on Penn State is impressive for any team.

Great post. Something tangible for those of us who don't know much about these OC's in general and Canada in particular.
