Lowest cost MSY long flight fare

Looking to take the whole family (party of 7) on a vacation in 2017 and the destination will be based on best deal on flights from MSY. Looking at going somewhere far enough away that we wouldn't drive (so like vegas, la, sf, ny, philly, Boston, DC for example).
What's the lowest cost for something like that?
Could be around Mardi Gras, summer, thanksgiving or Christmas.

Outside of a crystal ball, using Google Flights explore function will be beneficial.
But to base your trip entirely on flight costs is a little strange. You could spend $200/pp to fly to Vegas but incur $600/day in expenses vs. $300/pp to DC and $300/day in expenses.

For something like that where you don't know where you want to go, I'd go to Skyscanner.com, put in your origin city, dates of travel, and you can search "anywhere" and just browse prices.
It's my favorite flight website because of the flexibility in searching. I do it for fun sometimes just to look at prices.

If you're looking for mardi gras you may want to start looking now. Flights are pretty reasonable for february currently. Does your family ski, want a beach vacation, or a big city?
Also how long of a trip would you like? A week? 4 days?

Your problem is that you were wanting to go around holidays, when fares double and triple. I've seen flights to MIA, LAX, Las Vegas, New York, for not much more than $100.

Vegas was a dirt cheap vacation for us. Flew South west for $140 RT.
new York is often around $150ish RT on certain specials.

I can't find anything less than $179 for Vegas.
Also, anyone join $9 club for Spirit (for $59) and was it worth it?

If your current itinerary will cost $59 or less when booking through the lower fare, do it. Otherwise don't. Not so hard when travelling with multiple people. There are so many players in this market now, there is no point in speculatively tying your self down to one LCC. Soon AA will be releasing its basic economy fares, as well as UA. Delta is already doing it.
