So my question to you, did your parents move here to have more religious freedom in America with the Muslim culture left in tact or did they move here for religious freedom yet willing to adopt American culture as a byproduct of that freedom? Thanks.
We had religious freedom in Pakistan. Moving to America had nothing to do with religion. My parents wanted us to have better educational opportunities in the US.
They wanted to retain a lot of the culture (ex. language, certain customs, religion, etc.), but were willing and did adapt to American way of life. They accepted American pop culture, learned english, etc.
I know you want immigrants to accept American culture, and thats obviously reasonable. It is also reasonable for immigrants to want to retain some of their own culture.
Now, finding the right balance between retaining culture and assimilating is harder than most people understand. If you haven't gone through it, you won't know.
It was embarrassing as a child seeing my mom dress in traditional clothes in public bc she didn't look like other americans. But in hindsight, I regret feeling that embarrassment because she ended up sacrificing some of her culture to fit in. And I am sure that was so hard for her to do. If she dressed like that in public today, I'd be proud to see her feel comfortable enough to show that.
I don't know if I answered your question. I prob went off on a tangent

I moved from La. to Arkansas 33 years ago so yeah, I've gone through it.
