As a Catholic you can say or think anything you want about the pope. I'm Catholic and not a big fan of our current one! As a Catholic you are not supposed to publicly argue against Church doctrine. You may privately disagree with it and argue it with your priest, bishop, cardinal, or pope.

Doctrine wise discouraging bearing false witness and spreading lies is sound.
None of that determines if an individual story is true to false!

I was taught we aren't to speak negatively about the Pope because he's infallible and doing so is like speaking negatively about God who is all knowing and good. But whatever- that's an argument for another day.

Yes 10 commandments say thou shall not bear false witness. But he said "even if it's TRUE."

But it's possible he was referring to mud slinging smear tactics being sinful even if they are true. I get that.

maybe I jumped to conclusions and misinterpreted him, but I still have my doubts
