Pedo rings exist, but I am skeptical that they exist on some massive scale where everyone in Washington is going to "Eyes Wide Shut" parties, donning masks and sacrificing children.

Such ideas were very popular in the 80's during the "Satanic Panic" and almost every single case was shown to be total BS.

but we're going to need this new thing called "evidence" - credible evidence that can be weighed and examined against countervailing evidence.

Probably not. There was a large inundation of communist leaning homosexual Jesuit priests in the 1960s. There is some evidence that this was a plot by KGB officials to destroy the Church from within. Considering over 90% of the victims were boys, the homosexuality aspect of the tragedy was downplayed or flat out ignored by the media. Father Malachi Martin (a fascinating and controversial priest) predicted the pedophilia epidemic was imminent in the 1960s. From all indications, that's when the problem became systemic and so widespread.
